over 30 participants in each.
In addition to race entry, registration to the
event also provided some goodies for each young
racer, including a swim cap, Bear Chase t-shirt,
race bib, and other small Yellowhead County
giveaways like Frisbees.
Each age group had different distances to
accomplish, but the goal was the same. Racers
began in Bear Lake and ran/swam to shore as fast
as they could.
Waiting for them was a bike station, where
racers got on their bikes and biked around Bear
Lake Campground. Once they got their bikes
back to the bike station, they ran through the
campground to reach the finish line.
Racers were welcomed with cheers and
applause from family and friends that were
waiting, as well as from Yellowhead County and
Fish and Wildlife volunteers. Every racer earned
a medal of participation courtesy of the County.
2019 marked the third year for the Bear Chase
Triathlon, which will “absolutely be continuing”
as an annual event, said YC Recreation
Coordinator Mark Tavenor.
The Parks and Recreation Department had a
goal to bring out as many families to the event as
they could, and they certainly succeeded. The
first Bear Chase Triathlon saw approximately 70
registrants, and with over 115 racers this year
they look forward to continuing to grow. “We
want to increase awareness and get Edson and
Yellowhead County residents out to a great
event,” said Tavenor. “It is a way for families to
be active and have a great time together, so we'd :Family and friends filled the beach of Bear Lake to cheer on their young racers during the Bear Chase
