Batter-up for 22 teams at Charity Ball Tournament

by Masha Scheele

The Edson local charity baseball tournament
was a huge success this past weekend, with 22
teams batting off.
Three teams joined the competition from
Hinton, while approximately six drove out
from Edmonton and the rest were local teams.
For many locals, this tournament is
something they look forward to each year, and
organizer Chris Valliere-Kowalchuk stated
that this might be their most successful year to
date.
“The tournament went awesome, I think it
was one of our best years that we've ever had.
This was our fifth year. We're still counting all
the money to determine where we're sitting
and how we're doing for donations for the
three groups that helped out,” he said.
Money raised through the tournament is
going to the Edson Food Bank Society, Edson
and District Victim Services - PARTY
program, and the Edson Animal Rescue
Society -EARS.
The baseball season in Alberta is short and
the tournament association hopes to help
others while enjoying the game.
Community involvement is huge for the
charity ball tournament to run smoothly and
successfully, Chris said, “Having all the
people behind us in the community in the
Edson and Yellowhead County knowing what
we do, and what we've done."
"We've been successful every year and we
just kind of keep pushing and pushing,” said
Valliere-Kowalchuk on how the tournament
became such a success this year. “I think a lot
of it is being out there in the community and
being proud of where we live and showing
