Armchair Travelling Series:

The joys of canoe travel

by Brianne Benson

The Edson Public Library welcomed special
guests and canoe connoisseurs Ralph Rix and
his wife Sandy Rix to present as part of the
Armchair Travelling series this winter. Rix and
his wife devoted the evening of Tuesday,
January 21, to sharing their passion and the
endless possibilities of travelling by canoe.
Through photographs, videos, and maps, Rix
showed the immense number of places and
routes for canoe travel in Alberta and Canada.
“There is almost an unlimited number of places
to paddle in Canada,” said Rix.
“Instead of showing you just one trip I
wanted to show you the places that canoeing
can take you,” he began.
As he introduced his presentation with a map
of the fur trade routes he said, “This country
was made for canoeing. It was always explored
with canoes by settlers and the native people
got around by canoe as well. What they could
do in those days, we can still do today.”
“Canoeing is very practical and accessible to
Canadians, the cost is relatively low, and you
can start with easy trips and work your way up
if you are starting with limited knowledge or
skill,” Rix said. “You can go on a day trip or
even go on a many-months trip by canoe in
Canada.” Ralph Rix discussing canoe routes with one of the many guests who attended his Armchair Traveller
